Dramatic comeback: UCLA volleyball player Brian Boone, a former Edison High player, is among six finalists for the Festival’s Nuprin Comeback Award. The award is given to athletes who overcame a sports-related injury to compete at the Festival.

Boone, a 6-foot-5 middle blocker on the West team, suffered tendinitis and calcium deposits in his knee at UCLA, where he just finished his junior year.

Other finalists are: Liv Ellen Halle (team handball), Karen LaFace (diving), Wendy Bruce (gymnastics), Bob Foth (shooting) and Mark Maretzki (water polo).

The award will be presented at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Los Angeles Hilton.

Add volleyball: Boone is one of two former Edison players on the West roster. Mike Diehl, a teammate of Boone’s at Edison before going to UC Santa Barbara, was added to the roster. Each Festival volleyball team is allowed to add one player after last week’s World University Games tryouts.

The West team opens its schedule against the East at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Loyola Marymount’s Gersten Pavilion.

Last add volleyball: Former Laguna Beach High standout Dain Blanton, the 1989 Times Orange County player of the year, is one of eight current or former Pepperdine players competing in the Festival. Blanton plays for the West team.
