Share

Individual residents of single-family houses and people living in homes on large lots will benefit from eased water-rationing rules adopted Tuesday by Oxnard’s City Council.

Council members voted to increase allotments to 184.5 gallons a day for people living alone in single-family houses.

The previous ceiling was 142 gallons daily. Both allotments include 57 gallons for landscaping.

Residents of houses on lots of more than 6,000 square feet will be allotted 30 gallons more daily for each additional 1,000 square feet, up to a maximum lot size of 22,000 square feet.

Those living in single-family homes on lots smaller than 6,000 square feet will continue to be allowed 85 gallons per person daily, plus 57 gallons per house for landscaping, before penalties are assessed.

A contingent of residents of homes on large lots near the River Ridge Golf Course in north Oxnard called for even larger landscaping allotments, but the council turned them down.

Some in the audience hissed when Councilwoman Dorothy S. Maron, who voted for the increases, suggested, “Pray for rain!”

The vote for the higher allotments was 4 to 1, with Councilman Michael A. Plisky voting no.
