From Times Staff and Wire Reports

At least 20 motorists saw a man raping a 3-year-old girl near a busy highway during afternoon rush hour, but only one came to her aid. Authorities said tow truck driver Noel Sanchez was the lone witness to come forward. Sanchez saw the attack while stalled in a traffic jam on FDR Drive in Upper Manhattan. He left his truck, chased down the suspect and held him for arrest. The child’s uncle, Leroy Saunders, 29, was charged with first-degree rape and held without bail. Saunders took the girl from a playground to an area adjacent to the highway, where he attacked her, authorities said.
