UCLA volleyball player Brian Boone, a former standout at Edison High School, was named co-recipient of the Nuprin comeback award Tuesday in a ceremony at the Los Angeles Hilton.

The award is given to U.S. Olympic Festival athletes who have come back from sports-related injuries.

Boone, a 6-foot-5 middle blocker with the West team, shared the award with team handball player Liv Halle of Colorado Springs, Colo.

Both athletes, and their trainers who helped them during rehabilitation, each received a $5,000 grant with the award.

Boone, a junior who underwent surgery last year for tendinitis and calcium deposits in his knee, recovered in time to play for the gold-medal winning West team at last year’s Festival in Minneapolis.

Halle, 23, a native of Norway, tore ligaments in her left knee last December but recovered in time to play for the East team at the Festival.
