Fernando Valenzuela’s second comeback attempt will begin Friday night, when he starts for the Angels’ double-A club at Midland, Tex. Valenzuela will face the Shreveport, La., Captains, an affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, in his first game since June 12.

Valenzuela, who was put on the disabled list June 13 when tests revealed an abnormality in the flow of blood to his heart, was declared medically able to play July 1. However, he balked at going to the minors for longer than a 20-day rehabilitation assignment, and the Angels released him July 5. A week later, he signed a minor league contract with a clause stating that if he isn’t recalled within 30 days of his first start, he will be free to pitch elsewhere.

The Angels signed the 30-year-old left-hander June 4 in hopes he would become their fifth starter. He pitched well in one game for Class-A Palm Springs and two for Midland, but was hit hard in his two major league starts. He was 0-2 with a 12.15 earned-run average in 6 2/3 innings.
