A grenade was found on a road in Chula Vista on Friday afternoon, officials said.

The pin was pulled and the spoon was off, but the grenade did not explode, officials said. San Diego Sheriff’s deputies removed it from Otay Lakes Road, where it was found, said Sgt. Roy Stamper.

The grenade will be disposed of in an ammunition dump later, Stamper said.

Stamper said he did not know what kind of grenade it was, but it had military markings.

A road crew found the grenade shortly before 3 p.m., about 7 miles east of Southwestern College. From 3:33 p.m. to 4:03 p.m., authorities closed off a 12-mile stretch of Otay Lakes Road from Lane Avenue to California 94, Stamper said.

It is unknown how many people were on the road at the time, but, according to authorities, Otay Lakes Road is heavily traveled.
