From Staff and Wire Reports

Carl Lewis raced to an impressive victory in the men’s 100 meters and Sandra Farmer-Patrick continued her domination of the women’s 400-meter hurdles Saturday in the New York Games at Columbia University’s Wien Stadium.

Meanwhile, Tony Dees upset Greg Foster in the 110-meter high hurdles and Mary Slaney finished fifth in the women’s 800 meters, won by Maria Mutola, a high school student from Mozambique.

Lewis, two-time Olympic gold medalist and former world record-holder, had to wait through three false starts--one each by Lee McRae and Cubans Andres Simon and Jorge Luis Aguilera.

Charging into the lead after about 40 meters, Lewis was clocked in a meet-record 10.02 seconds, leading a 1-2-3 sweep for the Santa Monica Track Club. Mike Marsh was second in 10.17 and Mark Witherspoon third in 10.21.

Farmer-Patrick, who set the American record of 53.37 in this meet in 1989, ran another strong race, clocking 53.77. It was the seventh time she has broken 54 seconds--the only American to accomplish the feat.

Dees, who failed to make the U.S. team for the World Championships, beat all three members of the team in the 110 hurdles. The start of the race was marred by five false starts, but when it finally began, Dees surged to the front immediately and led all the way in winning in 13.18, his personal best. The time made him the third-fastest performer in the world this year, behind Britain’s Colin Jackson (13.09) and Foster (13.10).

Foster, obviously irked by the rash of false starts, got off slowly and his late surge fell short. Foster, the national champion, finished second in 13.26.
