Nearly half a million people commute between Los Angeles and Orange counties every day, a major factor in the creation of smog, state and county officials say.

A survey conducted for Commuter Transportation Services, a nonprofit, Los Angeles-based, ride-share consulting agency, also showed that 86% of drivers in Orange County drive alone, making it the county with the highest percentage of solo drivers in the region. CTS released other data at an Orange County Transportation Authority meeting Monday that places the Orange County commute in a regional context.

For example, about 241,000 people who live in Los Angeles County commute to jobs in Orange County each day, while 219,000 Orange County residents commute to work in Los Angeles County--a reversal of the situation just two decades ago, when Orange County was a bedroom community for Los Angeles.

Regionally, 10% of commuters are given the opportunity to work at home if they are connected to their offices via electronic equipment, and 90% of those “telecommute” four days per month. No breakdown was available for Orange County.
