World IN BRIEF : CYPRUS : Government Rejects Plan for 4-Way Talks
The Cyprus government rejected Turkish proposals backed by the United States for talks on the future of the divided island. “We reject four-way talks,” a government spokesman said, referring to the proposal for negotiations involving the Greek and Turkish governments and representatives of Greek and Turkish Cypriots. President Bush endorsed the plan while visiting Turkey on Monday, but the Greek-installed Nicosia government does not want to include Turkish Cypriots because it fears this would imply recognition of the breakaway area.
