A fire gutted the kindergarten building at Newhope Elementary School on Tuesday night, neighbors on the street and fire officials said.

Shawn Vaughn, 17, said he was sitting on his trampoline in front of his house at 4407 Regent Drive at 9:40 p.m. when he heard an explosion and saw flames coming from the school at 4419 Regent Drive.

“It was like a soft ‘boom,’ ” Vaughn said. He then ran to call 911.

Ian Andrews, 13, whose house is next to the school, said he and his family quickly ran outside to water their bushes to prevent the fire from spreading to their yard.
