Santa Monica : Statement on Pollution
Drawings of a sculpture being proposed for placement under the Santa Monica Pier as a statement about the pollution of Santa Monica Bay are on display in the lobby of City Hall through Aug. 22.
German artist Manfred Muller, who recently worked as artist in residence at the Santa Monica Museum of Art, has offered to donate the sculpture, “Twilight and Yearning,” to the city. The work would consist of three hulls of wooden lifeboats lashed vertically to the pillars of the pier, hanging down from the underside.
Muller’s intention is that the boats would not be lowered until their symbolic message is perceived and responsibility assumed for reversing the current environmental conditions, according to Maria de Herrera, the city’s arts division administrator.
