CYPRESS : Ordinance Provides for Open Space
Developers who want to build apartments in the city will have to pay for the maintenance of open space under an ordinance given initial approval this week by the City Council.
The ordinance requires developers to help finance the construction of new parks or the rehabilitation of existing parkland. The fee is based on the value of the land on which the development is proposed.
“This has been a long time coming,” said Councilwoman Gail H. Kerry, adding that open space is needed in the community.
According to staff reports, the northern portion of the city is currently the most in need of open space, though there is a shortage of land available to build the parks.
A city survey of 19 Orange County cities revealed that 17 charge open space fees for apartment developments. Those cities include Anaheim, Brea, Westminster and Tustin.
