AMATEUR GOLF ROUNDUP : Dalton Rallies to Win Junior Event

Dan Dalton shot a two-over-par 74 Thursday for a three-stroke victory in the 54-hole Cog Hill Championships, an American Junior Golf Assn. tournament in Lemont, Ill.

Dalton, 18, of Huntington Beach, began the day tied with Tony Carnivale of Quincy, Ill. Carnivale led by two shots after 10 holes but bogeyed three of the final six holes to finish second with a 217 total.

In the boys’ 13-14 division, Jose Bird of Puerto Rico shot 73 to end the three-year reign of El Toro’s Ben Garner, who finished three shots back in second after a 74.

Medalist Tiger Woods of Cypress easily won his first match in the USGA Junior Amateur Championship in Orlando, Fla.

Woods, 15, who finished the 36 holes of medal play at the Bay Hill Club course with a four-under 140, beat Dan Konieczny of Mount Pleasant, Pa., 8 and 7. Woods won four of the first five holes and had three birdies and eight pars.

Paul Hinkle of Costa Mesa also qualified for match play but lost to Kevin Mihailoff of Naples, Fla., on the 20th hole.

Two rounds of match play will be held today and two Saturday. The final is scheduled Sunday.
