CHARGER UPDATE : NOTEBOOK / T.J. SIMERS : Adviser to Stanley Richard Bows Out of Contract Talks

Chris Dorsey, who has been friend and adviser to first-round pick Stanley Richard, told Charger General Manager Bobby Beathard that he will have nothing more to do with Richard’s contract negotiations.

“I don’t know how this affects everything,” Beathard said. “Chris Knepp (Richard’s attorney) has been the negotiator the whole time, and I say it every day, but I hope we can wrap this up. It shouldn’t be that difficult.”

Coach Dan Henning had praise for quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver, guard Eric Moten, linebacker Alema Fitisemanu, safety Anthony Shelton and tackle Mike Withycombe.

“Withycombe gets the Flagstaff award because he’s gone almost every step at right tackle,” Henning said. “Billy had an outstanding first day here; he was 11 for 12 in the two team drills we did.

“I see some consistency and competiveness in Moten, and Fitz (Fitisemanu) did a great job in special teams. I can’t remember his name (Shelton), but he had a good day today.

“I’ve been watching him because that’s obviously a position we’ve got to fill. We thought we were going to fill it with that draft choice (Richard), but I don’t know.”

Quarterback Bob Gagliano dislocated a finger on his right hand in the morning practice against the Cardinals, but after having it X-rayed and reset, he returned to practice in the afternoon.

The injuries continue to mount for the Chargers. They’ve lost linebacker Junior Seau, wide receiver Anthony Miller, guard Mike Zandofsky and defensive Burt Grossman to pulled muscles.

The Chargers and Cardinals will each run 48 plays in a controlled scrimmage today in the Walkup Dome.
