Stolen Truck Crashes Into Gas Main

A man driving a stolen truck collided with another car and then crashed into a natural gas main in National City on Saturday night, sending police and fire units into the area and shutting off gas in the neighborhood, authorities said.

The hit-and-run accident occurred at the corner of 7th Street and National City Boulevard at 7:20 p.m., after the truck had been stolen in the 300 block of National City Boulevard, police said.

After striking the other car, the driver proceeded to 8th Street and National City Boulevard, where he lost control of the vehicle and hit the gas main, said a National City police spokesman.

National City police and fire units were called into the area, where the city block surrounding the Radisson Inn at 700 National City Blvd. was closed, police said. San Diego Gas & Electric shut off gas in the area shortly after the incident.

National City Police were searching for the suspect late Saturday, said Sgt. Ray Allen.
