PIRU : Man Nearly Drowns During Lake Swim
A Moorpark man was in critical condition Sunday after nearly drowning at Lake Piru, authorities said.
Twenty-six-year-old J. Carmen Herrera was swimming with friends at the lake when he suddenly went under about 4 p.m., said Ventura County sheriff’s Lt. Joe Funchess.
“Apparently he couldn’t swim very well,” Funchess said. “His friends looked around and he wasn’t there.”
The lifeguard on duty at the lake found Herrera and brought him back to the surface and then began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Funchess said.
Herrera was transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Santa Clarita, where he remained on a respirator in critical condition Sunday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.
