PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Lott, Craig Didn’t Look Too Slow

If former San Francisco 49ers Ronnie Lott and Roger Craig have lost a step, it wasn’t apparent Saturday to a former teammate, quarterback Steve Young.

In his debut as a Raider, Craig gained 34 yards in six carries, a 5.7 yards-per-carry average.

“He made all the moves, had that second effort and was really high-stepping it,” Young said.

Of Lott, Young said: “He came up and really stuck somebody (Dexter Carter). Just as long as it’s not me. I don’t want any safety blitzes from that guy.”

Nose tackle Bob Golic, 33, who signed a two-year contract Saturday, said his holdout wasn’t a ploy to miss training camp.

“Honestly, I don’t like to miss training camp,” he said. “I actually feel like I need training camp.”

Golic signed his contract Saturday morning and had the nerve to dress for the game, even though he wouldn’t play.

“I knew it would kill me not to be here,” he said.

What did his teammates say when he entered the locker room Saturday morning?

“The usual barrage of vulgarities,” Golic said.

Young said he has been told he will split time with quarterback Joe Montana this season. Young, frustrated over the longevity of Montana’s illustrious career, tried to pursue a trade on his own in the off-season, but the 49ers were unwilling to let him go. Instead, they signed Young to a two-year contract worth $4.5 million.

The former Los Angeles Express star said he’s tired of being a star in the exhibition season.

“I’m Mr. July,” Young said. “I wish I could be Mr. October.”

The Raiders will practice this morning at Oxnard and depart Tuesday for Tokyo, where they will face the Miami Dolphins in an Aug. 3 exhibition.
