BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Perfection Overshadows Perfection

Share

Overshadowed by Dennis Martinez’s perfect game Sunday was a team record-tying streak of 38 consecutive scoreless innings by the Dodger pitching staff that ended on Larry Walker’s run-scoring triple in the seventh inning.

The streak equals the one by the 1966 Dodger staff as the longest in Los Angeles franchise history. In 1966, the contributing pitchers included future Hall of Famers Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale, plus Claude Osteen, Joe Moeller, Bob Miller, Phil Regan and Don Sutton.

This year, the streak was accomplished by Tim Belcher, John Candelaria, Ramon Martinez, Orel Hershiser, Kevin Gross, Jay Howell, Bob Ojeda and Mike Morgan.

The Dodger pitching staff has still not given up an earned run in its last 39 innings and has given up only one earned run in the last 50 innings.

The Dodgers won two out out of three games from the Montreal Expos this weekend despite being held hitless in 21 of 27 innings. Among the biggest losers: Brett Butler went one for 10, Juan Samuel went one for seven, Darryl Strawberry went two for 10 and Kal Daniels went one for nine.
