Works by visual artist Stuart Vaughan and movement artist Zoot will be performed Aug. 6 as part of the Barnsdall Artists Cafe series at Barnsdall Art Park’s Gallery Theatre, 4800 Hollywood Blvd.

Vaughan, who studied at the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta, will premiere controversial plays using his sculpted, life-size rod puppets in the tradition of Japanese Bunraku puppet theater. Included will be “The Chain Letter,” which deals with teen pregnancy and date rape, and two shorter works, “Time” and “My Baby,” which will be set to word jazz pieces by Ken Nordine.

Zoot, who has performed in the 1990 Los Angeles Open Festival and the recent Piccolo-Spoleto Festival in Charleston, S.C., will perform his comic satire, “Mutant Vaudevillians,” a combination of mime, dance, rap, poetry, jazz and hip-hop. The piece contains four character sketches, ranging from “Public Service Announcement,” which addresses the issue of safe sex, to “Closet Homeboy,” a depiction of a white yuppie CPA by day who turns into a rapper at night.
