Fernando Valenzuela won his first game with triple-A Edmonton, striking out seven in a 5-3 victory over Tacoma in a Pacific Coast League game Monday night at Edmonton.

Valenzuela, trying to make it back up with the Angels, went 5 2/3 innings, giving up six hits, including a pair of home runs. The former Cy Young Award winner faced 24 batters and threw 93 pitches, 57 for strikes.

Mike Marshall, who was signed to a minor league contract last Friday, is scheduled to join the Angels today in Cleveland. Angel Manager Doug Rader said Marshall was summoned for outfield depth before he knew Luis Polonia’s hyperextended left shoulder had improved dramatically by Monday.

“It’s a good chance for him to meet everybody, take some BP, some infield and see how we stand,” Rader said of Marshall, who was two for eight in three games with Class-A Palm Springs.

Polonia probably won’t resume throwing until the Angels play at Detroit Wednesday and Thursday.
