SIMI VALLEY : Household Wastes Disposal Site Chosen

Share

Simi Valley officials have chosen a site for a permanent facility where residents will be able to dispose of household wastes such as used motor oil and antifreeze.

The City Council agreed Monday to build the storage plant at 670 W. Los Angeles Ave., where a Ventura County animal shelter is located.

County officials said they do not object to sharing the site.

Jocelyn Reed of the city’s Environmental Services Department said the collection building is expected to open by fall. It will cost about $25,000 to construct and $19,000 a year to operate.

Motor oil, antifreeze, latex paint and automotive batteries will be collected at the center free of charge. State law prohibits disposal of such waste in landfills.

The center will be open from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays at first; its hours may expand to all day Saturday.
