Two young children died within hours of each other Tuesday as the result of falling into the swimming pools of their family homes, located less than a mile apart.

Sixteen-month-old Joseph James Donsbach was pronounced dead at 6:34 p.m. at a fire station where he was taken after being pulled from the water.

Two-year-old Reynaldo Jacquez died at 8:01 p.m. at Children’s Hospital, where he had been taken a day earlier after being found in the water.

Joseph was being watched by his stepfather, who left him unattended to retrieve something from a car, San Diego Sheriff’s Sgt. Roy Stamper said.

When he returned he found the toddler in the pool of the home, located in the 3500 block of Siembre Street, Stamper said.

The boy was taken to a nearby fire station where he was pronounced dead at 6:34 p.m., said Jerry Hillbrand, a county medical examiner investigator.

Reynaldo was discovered by a family member at 4:24 p.m. Monday in a pool in the 3100 block of Casa Bonita Drive, said George Dickason, a county medical examiner investigator.

He was taken to Children’s Hospital and put on a life-support system. He died Tuesday night, Dickason said.
