Suspect in Double Murder Escapes on Way to Court

A 17-year-old gang member charged in a double murder in Redondo Beach slipped out of his handcuffs and escaped from custody Wednesday as he was being taken to a hearing at Inglewood Juvenile Court.

The youth, whose name was withheld because of his age, made his escape shortly before he was scheduled to appear in court for a hearing on whether he should be tried as an adult, district attorney’s office spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said.

The teen-ager had been handcuffed to three other prisoners and placed in a van for the ride from Central Juvenile Hall to the courthouse, said Shirley Bolinger, a chief of administration and program services for the Los Angeles County Probation Department, which runs the juvenile facilities.

“Before they unloaded the van they did check the cuffs, but he is a very small 17-year-old and he managed to slip the cuffs,” Bolinger said.
