OCTD Bus Mechanics to Compete in Chicago

Frank Scholl of Huntington Beach, Harry Martina of Buena Park and Joel Rule tw of Anaheim, all Orange County Transit District mechanics, will compete Aug. 17 in Chicago against other American and Canadian mechanics at the American Public Transit Assn.’s International Bus Maintenance Roadeo.

The Orange County mechanics won the maintenance category as a three-member team against other teams in the district’s recent annual Roadeo.

The Roadeo emphasized teamwork as contestants in a timed test inspected, identified and repaired equipment-related defects on a standard transit bus.

Model Susan Jeske of Newport Beach, 1987 Miss Orange County, has been honored for her community service by Rep. Robert K. Dornan (R-Garden Grove). Jeske has volunteered her singing talents for such events as “Sing Out Against Drugs” and Bob Hope’s USO tour.

Chris Daley, owner of Interiors in San Clemente, an interior design studio, was presented an honorable mention in the curtains and draperies category of the recent Window Fashions Design Competition sponsored by Window Fashions Magazine.

Brea resident Ronald N. Anderson, former assistant principal at Sonora High School, has been appointed administrator of evaluation and technology services, and John Pappalardo of Arcadia, former director of data processing, has been named manager of business services in the Fullerton Joint Union High School District.

Home economist Wilma E. Burley has been inducted into the National Home Economists in Business Hall of Fame, the highest honor a member can receive.

Burley is president of Anderson Burley Woodside Inc., a manufacturers representative company in Los Alamitos.

Burley, a home economist for 25 years specializing in food and nutrition, is also a member of the American Home Economics Assn. and Phi Upsilon Omicron.

Tracy Finchum, 8, a third-grader at La Tierra Elementary School in Mission Viejo, was named winner of the Sheriff Department’s Talking Police Car name contest.

Tracy received a $50 gift certificate for the winning name entry of “Otto Sayno.” Through remote control, the car can talk to schoolchildren, turn on its headlights and emergency lights, play music, lock the doors and sound the siren.

Its main purpose is to deliver an anti-drug message to schoolchildren. The Mission Viejo Rotary Club donated the funds to install the electronics.

Sheila Brazier of Huntington Beach, dean of instruction at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, has retired after 29 years at the college, 25 years as an instructor in geography and anthropology.

Newport Beach resident Betty Ward, a 71-year-old community activist who is also a house-sitter and companion to vacationing parents’ teen-agers, has been recognized by the city with a “Betty Ward Day” for work with senior citizens, political campaigns and health care.

John Wayne Airport Manager Jan Mittermeier announced a series of electrical honors for the Thomas F. Riley Terminal that includes the 1991 Illuminating Engineering Society Lumen Award for exterior lighting, the premier award for exterior lighting in Orange County.

Other awards include the National Electrical Contractor’s Assn. Electrical Excellence Award, the 1991 Illuminating Engineering Society Lighting Award for exterior lighting, and the 1991 Paul Waterbury Lighting Award of Merit for exterior lighting.
