Rookie running back Chuck Webb of the Green Bay Packers, who underwent major reconstructive surgery on his right knee last fall, faces another operation to replace torn cartilage in the knee.

Webb, a third-round draft choice out of Tennessee, sustained cartilage damage on his second day of practice after ending a 16-day holdout and signing a three-year contract.

Webb will be out at least five weeks.

An expected battle for the Washington Redskins’ punting job during exhibition games ended when rookie Chris Shale, the collegiate punting leader last year at Bowling Green, was cut.

Coach Joe Gibbs said the job belongs to Kelly Goodburn, a five-year NFL veteran obtained by the Redskins last season.

The New York Giants reached a financial settlement with tight end Mark Bavaro, whose career was cut short by knee injuries. Terms were not announced.

Bavaro, a one-time All-Pro who was the Giants’ second-leading receiver last season despite playing in extreme pain, was waived July 15. He initially was offered only the $65,000 injury protection policy mandated by the league after he turned down a $110,000 offer to remain on the team’s physically unable to perform list.

Bavaro reportedly wanted about $375,000--half his anticipated 1991 salary.
