Greg Norman says the feeling is back in his game.

Norman shot a seven-under-par 65 on Friday to take a one-stroke lead over Scott Hoch in the Buick Open at Grand Blanc, Mich.

“It’s impossible to play good golf all the time,” Norman said after finishing at 12-under-par 132. “It’s like a pendulum, up and down. I can feel my pendulum getting started on an upward path again. It’s a nice feeling.

“There was no breeze at all out there. We were just scoping in on the flags and pulling the trigger. There were no worries. This is not that easy of a golf course. But because of the conditions, you can just go right at it.”

Hoch followed his tournament record-tying 63 with a 70 at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club. PGA champion Wayne Grady (66), defending Buick Open champion Chip Beck (67) and Brad Faxon (68) were third at 134.

Payne Stewart, the U.S. Open champion, shot 74-79 and missed the cut. Other notables missing the cut of 141 included Davis Love III, Wayne Levi, Mark Calcavecchia, Tom Kite and Raymond Floyd.

Jim Colbert, fighting back spasms, shot a five-under-par 67 to share the first-round lead with Larry Laoretti and Homero Blancas in the Northville Long Island Senior Classic at Jericho, N.Y.

The 50-year-old Colbert had five birdies during his bogey-free round at the Meadow Brook Club.

Defending champion George Archer, Gary Player, Jim Dent, Frank Beard, Miller Barber, Bob Charles and Mike Joyce, a local club pro, were next at 68.

Danielle Ammaccapane shot a six-under-par 66 to take a one-stroke lead over Pam Wright and Peggy Kirsch after one round of an LPGA tournament at Vienna, Ohio.

Ammaccapane had seven birdies and a bogey to match her lowest competitive round of the year.

Wright birdied five of her last seven holes, and Kirsch shot a seven-under-par 28 to break the course record for the front nine, but struggled on the back nine.

U.S. Amateur Public Links Champion David Berganio of Sylmar shot a five-over-par 76 but still won the 25th Pacific Coast Amateur Championship by three strokes at Flagstaff, Ariz.

Berganio began the day with a nine-shot lead that was reduced to one heading to the final hole--where Berganio made par and runner-up Jaxon Brigman of Oklahoma State took a double bogey.

Berganio said he will play in the U.S. Amateur Championship Aug. 20-25 at Chattanooga, Tenn.

Emilee Klein of Studio City reached the final of the U.S. Girls Junior Championship with a 3 and 2 victory over Alicia Allison of Santa Ana at Wichita, Kan.
