MGM plans to begin shooting on a remake of Lewis Milestone’s 1939 classic “Of Mice and Men” this fall, for release in the spring of 1992.

The remake, based on the John Steinbeck novel, will star John Malkovich as the slow-witted Lenny and Gary Sinese--who is also directing and co-producing--as George. Sinese played Tom Joad in the Broadway version of Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath.”

The headline in a Film Clips item Aug. 4 gave the impression that a new film of John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men” would be the first since 1939. Although the new film will be the first theatrical release since the original, there have been two TV versions, in 1968 and 1981.

Shooting is scheduled to begin Sept. 16, with five weeks in the Monterrey-Salinas area that Steinbeck immortalized in his stories and novels, and four weeks on the MGM lot.

“Of Mice and Men” is the tragic story of mentally handicapped Lenny and the migrant worker, George, who watches over him, as they try desperately to stop wandering and lead steady lives in a ranching community.

In the original film, which was directed by Milestone with a script by Steinbeck and music by Aaron Copland, Lon Chaney Jr. played Lenny and Burgess Meredith played George.
