BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Finley Misses His Turn

Share

With Chuck Finley missing his scheduled start Saturday because of an inflamed big toe on his left foot, the Angels started Kirk McCaskill in his place and moved up Mark Langston to take McCaskill’s scheduled turn today.

Langston (14-5) will try to become the first Angel to reach 15 victories in today’s 1 p.m. game, against Seattle’s Erik Hanson (6-5).

The Angels are undecided about the starter for Monday’s series opener against Minnesota, the American League West leader, but have penciled in Finley to start Tuesday, if he is ready, with Jim Abbott scheduled for Wednesday. Abbott, who pitched Friday, would not be prepared to pitch Monday on two days rest. Finley underwent a bone scan Saturday night and the Angels were awaiting results. Manager Doug Rader said Friday before Finley was scratched that Mike Fetters was not scheduled to take a third turn.

Rader shook up the lineup with the Angels facing Seattle’s 6-10 left-hander Randy Johnson. Three left-handed regulars--Luis Polonia, Wally Joyner and Dave Parker--were out of the lineup. It also marked the Angel debuts of former Dodger Mike Marshall, who started at first and batted cleanup, and Shawn Abner, recently acquired from the San Diego Padres in exchange for Jack Howell. Abner started in center field.

The Angels held their annual family game Saturday, with youngsters batting their fathers. The pitcher welcomed to the mound was none other than Bert Blyleven, who is attempting to come back from rotator-cuff surgery at age 40. Blyleven, trying to return next season after undergoing major surgery last spring, pitched a beachball--underhanded.
