Long Beach Council OKs Majority Latino District
The Long Beach City Council on Tuesday approved a reapportionment plan that for the first time establishes a council district with a Latino majority.
The new 1st District, formed in the wake of a concerted lobbying effort by a coalition of Latino groups, will have a population that is 56% Latino. Activists hope that will be enough to elect the city’s first Latino council member.
Latinos, which are the city’s largest minority, doubled their numbers in Long Beach during the past decade to 24% of the population. Pointing to those figures, Long Beach’s Latino leadership threatened to take the city to court if the council did not create a district with a strong Latino voting bloc during this year’s reapportionment of council districts.
