The Gulls are close to an agreement on one of two NHL exhibition games that they will promote at the San Diego Sports Arena, Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell said.

Waddell said a few details have to be worked out for a Sept. 27 game between the expansion San Jose Sharks and the New Jersey Devils, and he still is seeking an opponent for the Kings in a Sept. 23 exhibition game at the Sports Arena. He said he hopes to attract the Stanley Cup-champion Pittsburgh Penguins.

SDSU is ranked 13th in the nation according to a preseason poll by Volleyball Monthly Magazine. The Aztecs, who were 24-12 and advanced to the round of 16 in the 1990 NCAA tournament, will return five of six starters when they open the 1991 season against No. 16 Pepperdine in the Arizona State Tournament Aug. 30. UCLA, the defending NCAA champion, is ranked No. 1 and will play host to SDSU on Sept. 27.
