Share

1. ITSALLGREEKTOME

Owner/trainer/jockey--Stephen and Jheri Redding/Wallace Dollase/Corey Nakatani.

Sire/dam--Sovereign Dancer/Sans Supplement.

Lifetime record/earnings--19--7--5--2/$1,288,398.

1991 record/earnings--5--1--2--1/$374,623.

Last race--June 29, Hollywood Park, Hollywood Gold Cup, 1 1/4 miles. Was ninth at half-mile, but closed to third, 2 3/4 lengths behind winner Marquetry and three-quarters of a length behind second-place Farma Way.

Today’s odds--9-2.

Outlook--Itsallgreektome is known as a turf runner, but the Classic will be run on dirt. He also likes tucking in behind the pacesetters in distance races, then coming out from his shell on the stretch. He will have to contend with other strong closers in today’s field.

2. ANSHAN

Owner/trainer/jockey--Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid/Charles Wittingham/Gary Stevens.

Sire/dam--Persian Bold/Lady Zi.

Lifetime record/earnings--20, 6--3--7/$829,129.

1991 record/earnings--8, 2--2--2/$424,500.

Last race--June 29, Hollywood Park, Hollywood Gold Cup, 1 1/4 miles. In his first ACRS start, Anshan finished third, 6 1/4 lengths behind winner Marquetry.

Today’s odds--15-1.

Outlook--Anshan is a runner who does his best at 1 1/8 miles, but fades when asked to go farther. On Feb. 17 he finished second, 2 1/2 lengths behind Farma Way in the 1 1/8-mile San Antonio Handicap. The next time out, he finished eighth, 17 1/2 lengths behind the same winner in the 1 1/4-mile Santa Anita Handicap. In his last outing, Anshan placed fourth, 6 1/4 lengths behind Marquetry in the Hollywood Gold Cup. But in his prior race, Anshan’s second-place finish in the 1 1/8-mile Californian was one length better than Marquetry’s third-place finish.

3. FARMA WAY

Owner/trainer/jockey--George Bunn/D. Wayne Lukas/Chris McCarron.

Sire/dam--Marfa/Fine Tribute.

Lifetime record/earnings--20 8--3--1/$1,912,176.

1991 record/earnings--8 5--1--1/$1,613,350.

Last race--June 29, Hollywood Park, Hollywood Gold Cup, 1 1/4 miles. Was third at half-mile, and second rest of way. Placed second to Marquetry by a head.

Today’s odds--2-1.

Outlook--Farma Way never lags behind by much early in a race. In all eight of his starts this year he either has led or been second going into the first turn. And he doesn’t tire--at least not often--which is why he’s the favorite today.

4. STALWART CHARGER

Owner/trainer/jockey--Sidney Factor/Pico Perdomo/Roberto Gonzales.

Sire/dam--Stalwart/Charge Back.

Lifetime record/earnings--10, 5--0--2/$457,900.

1991 record/earnings--2, 0--0--0/$1,500.

Last race--July 27, Del Mar, San Diego Handicap, 1 1/8 miles. Was never a factor and finished sixth, 8 1/4 lengths behind winner Twilight Agenda.

Today’s odds--30-1.

Outlook--Really bleak. In his two starts this year since coming back from injury, he placed well behind lesser competition. Both efforts have come in the past three weeks.

5. TWILIGHT AGENDA

Owner/trainer/jockey--Walter Haefner/D. Wayne Lukas/Laffit Pincay, Jr.

Sire/dam--Devil’s Bag/Grenzen.

Lifetime record/earnings--16--8--2--2/$282,909.

1991 record/earnings--5--3--1--1/$235,050.

Last race--July 27, Del Mar, San Diego Handicap, 1 1/8 miles. Took the lead at the far turn and held it from their to win by 3 1/2 lengths.

Today’s odds--5-1.

Outlook--Lukas’ second entry in this race doesn’t have Farma Way’s reputation. He does have Farma Way’s style. Twilight Agenda, considered a late-blooming 5-year-old, likes to set the pace and has the stamina to withstand pressure from closers in the stretch. At least he has in his three previous starts, all first-place efforts. He has yet to try this distance.

6. BEST PAL

Owner/trainer/jockey--John and Betty Mabee/Gary Jones/Patrick Valenzuela.

Sire/dam--Habitony/Ubetshedid.

Lifetime record/earnings--14--7--4--1/$1,443,695.

1991 record/earnings--6--1--3--1/$417,500.

Last race--July 7, Hollywood Park, Swaps Stakes, 1 1/4 miles. Came out of the stretch turn trailing by a head, but ran away for a four-length victory in 2:00.

Today’s odds--6-1.

Outlook--This will be the first American Championship Racing Series start for Best Pal, a quickly maturing 3-year-old who will have a distinct weight advantage carrying 116 pounds, eight pounds less than every other entry.

7. FESTIN

Owner/trainer/jockey--Burt and Nancy Kinerk/Ron McAnally/Eddie Delahoussaye.

Sire/dam--Mat Boy/Felicidades.

Lifetime record/earnings--20--8--4--3/$1,176,658.

1991 record/earnings--7--2--2--1/$983,250.

Last race--July 20, Rockingham Park, New England Classic, 1 1/8 miles. Was in fifth place nine lengths off the lead going into stretch call. finished second, three lengths behind winner Marquetry.

Today’s odds--7-2.

Outlook--Watch for Festin to fall way back early, but come on strong in the stretch. Festin’s two victories this year have come in races in which a hot early pace could not be maintained by the initial leaders. In one, Festin made up 20 lengths, in the other, 16.

8. UNBRIDLED

Owner/trainer/jockey--Frances Genter/Carl Nafzger/Craig Perret.

Sire/dam--Fappiano/Gana Facil.

Lifetime record/earnings--21--8--5--4/$3,968,430.

1991 record/earnings--4--2--0--0/$65,300.

Last race--Aug. 3, Arlington Park, an allowance sprint, seven furlongs. Drove between rivals at the top of the stretch and ran away to a 6 1/2-furlong victory.

Today’s odds--6-1.

Outlook--Notice Unbridled’s last race was a week ago in Chicago. The 1990 winner of the Kentucky Derby, Breeders’ Cup Classic and Eclipse Award has done 3,000 miles of traveling in the meantime. So has his jockey, one of only two in the Classic who have not been taking mounts at Del Mar this season.
