Robbery was the apparent motive in a stabbing attack on a Southeast San Diego street early Saturday that left a woman dead and her male companion injured, police said.

Three male suspects fled the scene, apparently absconding with the woman’s purse and the man’s wallet, police said.

The dead woman was identified as Eva Perez Rondon, 41. Her address was not available.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight Friday, police said, when the three assailants attacked the pair as they walked west on the 3100 block of K Street.

Two suspects began beating the man, police said, prompting the woman to flee. Another suspect ran after her, authorities said.

Police found the woman at the 3000 block of L Street, where she was later pronounced dead. The cause of death was a stab wound in the chest, the medical examiner’s office said.

Her companion, whose name was not available, was in good condition Saturday at the UC San Diego Medical Center.

He had been stabbed in the abdomen, authorities said.
