SIMI VALLEY : Video Cameras Will Inspect Sewer Lines

Simi Valley officials will soon be able to inspect the city’s sewer system by way of a floating video camera.

The City Council on Monday agreed to allocate $134,000 for the purchase of the television inspection system, which officials said will greatly increasetheir ability to locate and identify sewer problems and reduce maintenance costs.

“This is really tremendous technology and will keep a lot of streets from being torn up,” Councilman Glen McAdoo said.

City officials said the pipeline video system will consist of a remote-controlled television camera mounted on top of a floating platform. The camera, which will transmit color pictures to a television monitor, will traverse sewer lines as small as four inches in diameter and clearly reveal the condition of the pipe’s interior.

The color feature will enable work crews to determine whether dyes, paints and other possibly hazardous fluids and chemicals are flowing through the pipe.

The camera can also help trace the source of such fluids, officialssaid.

Pipeline video systems are already utilized by the cities of Thousand Oaks and Oxnard and the Ventura Regional Sanitation District.
