Carey Hall of Australia won the men’s pro sprint at the World Cycling Championships in Stuttgart, West Germany. Hall, 27, who beat defending champion Michael Huebner of Germany in the quarterfinals, outsprinted Fabrice Colas of France in both heats of the final.

In the other final on the second day of the races, Jens Lehmann of Germany beat Michael Gloeckner, also of Germany, in the individual pursuit for amateurs.

In women’s events, defending champion Connie Paraskevin-Young of the United States needed a race-off against Zhou Lingmei of China to reach the semifinals in the sprint event. Another American, Renee Duprel, the silver medalist in 1990, was eliminated by Felicia Ballanger of France.
