Irvine City Council Approves Plans for Grand Prix-Style Event in 1992
The Irvine City Council has unanimously approved plans for a Grand Prix-style racing event in Irvine next year.
The event, to benefit local charities, will be held Oct. 25, 1992, over a 1.2-mile course through the Irvine Spectrum. Invitations have been extended to Mario Andretti, Rick Mears, Johnny Rutherford, Parnelli Jones, Roger Mears, Michael Andretti, Dan Gurney, Kevin Cogan, Robert Guerrero, Bobby Unser, Al Unser Jr. and Al Unser Sr.
Using American Racing Series Cars, which are slightly smaller and less powerful than Indy cars, the drivers will compete in a special format of two 20-minute preliminary heats followed by a winner-take-all final with prize money split among designated charities.
