Elizabeth Bowman of Bonita Country Club shot a final-round 75 at the par-72, 6,104-yard Torrey Pines North course to easily capture the championship of the Women’s City Amateur tournament. Bowman had a three-day total of 223, seven over for the tournament, and won by 16 strokes over Mildred Stanley.

Stanley, of Castle Creek Country Club, shot an 87 and finished at 239. Deborah Baronofsky of the San Diego Country Club was third at 247.

SWIMMING

Lars Jorgensen, competing for the Blue Fin team, took first place in the 400 meter freestyle event and was one of three San Diego area swimmers who placed among the top four at the National Swimming Championships in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Jorgensen, of San Diego, finished with a time of three minutes, 54.15 seconds. Kirk Stackle of San Diego, competing for Texas Aquatics, was third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.08. Kari Lyderson of Encinitas was fourth in the 400 freestyle (4:17.20).

TENNIS

Gene Carswell of San Diego twice was on the losing end of a semifinal doubles match and was eliminated at the U.S. National Amateur championships at Kiamesha Lake, N.Y. Carswell and Wayne Speer of Shreveport, La., seeded fourth, lost to top-seeded Marco Cacopardo of New York and John Simone of Huntington Valley, Pa., in men’s doubles, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. Carswell and Kristi Meola of Florham Park, N.J., then fell to second-seeded Simone and Liz Barker of Trumbull, Conn., 6-3, 6-4, in mixed doubles.
