Some Advice for the County Supervisors on the Deficit and Budget Cuts
It might help the County Supervisors to look at necessary budget cuts a bit differently. A $67.7-million shortfall in a $3.5-billion budget requires a 1.9% reduction--hardly a disaster. Normal attrition and delaying low-priority projects would achieve the required fiscal balance.
Even the most dedicated and hard-working county employee will probably agree this could be done--fairly and equitably--if the political will and leadership existed. Unfortunately, that is a big part of the problem.
Too often the so-called budget cuts are, in reality, increases in a proposed budget for new programs that may not be affordable at this point in time.
