PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NFL : Ailing Kelly Says He’ll Play in Opener
Quarterback Jim Kelly of the Buffalo Bills, who sprained a ligament in his left ankle against the Green Bay Packers Saturday, said he will play in the season opener against the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 1.
“I’ll be there,” Kelly said as he left Rich Stadium limping, but not on crutches, after undergoing treatment. “It doesn’t hurt that bad.”
Lawrence Taylor’s flexibility probably saved the All-Pro linebacker from an injury more serious than his sprained ankle Saturday night when he got tangled up with tackle Ron Mattes of the New York Jets.
“Lawrence continues to be a medical marvel,” Giant Coach Ray Handley said. “He’s doing things he could not do last night. He’s getting up on his toes, and if there’s not a plateauing of his condition, he might be OK in a couple of days.”
Former UCLA tight end Charles Arbuckle was cut by the Cleveland Browns.
