CHARGER REVIEW : REPORT CARD / T.J. SIMERS : Chargers’ GPA Suffers Against 49ers

C: QUARTERBACKS

John Friesz left his chances of becoming Opening Day QB in San Francisco. Billy Joe Tolliver isn’t ready to be invited to the owner’s box, but he hangs tough.

B: RUNNING BACKS

Ronnie Harmon touches the ball one time and proves again he’s best offensive threat. When Eric Bieniemy gets a chance, he has made like Marion Butts.

D: RECEIVERS

The difference between Jerry Rice and Anthony Miller is that Rice catches the ball. Chargers look like they’ve given up on 1990 third-round pick, Walter Wilson.

D: OFFENSIVE LINE

That was the starting offensive line on the field in the fourth quarter. Hard to believe. When it comes to protecting the quarterback, wave the white flag.

F: DEFENSIVE LINE

Chargers’ airplane was delayed in leaving San Diego. The pass rushers reportedly were on board, but they never made it to the stadium.

D: LINEBACKERS

Highlight films of Stephon Weatherspoon’s one and only start in the National Football League will be unavailable due to lack of material.

C: DEFENSIVE BACKS

Teddy bear safety tandem of Anthony Shelton and Stanley Richard didn’t know that wasn’t Joe Montana at QB until after the game, and they could have cared less.

B: SPECIAL TEAMS

Last week Tom Whelihan’s a punter, this week he’s a kicker and next week he’s on his way back to the WLAF. He should have grown up throwing the ball.

F: COACHING

Chargers left town in opposite direction of Golden Gate Bridge; Jumper alert has been postponed until their return Sept. 8.
