Jury Selected for Trial of Six Narcotics Officers

Nine men and three women were selected Friday as jurors in the federal civil rights trial of six Los Angeles County narcotics officers accused of beating drug dealers and stealing money and property during narcotics raids.

Federal prosecutors claim that from 1985 through 1987, five sheriff’s deputies and a Los Angeles Police Department detective stole money and valuables from dealers and planted drugs on some of them to justify their arrests. According to prosecutors, most of those victimized by police were black drug traffickers who will testify for the government.

The officers, who have denied the charges, face maximum prison terms ranging from 33 years to 57 years if convicted.
