HUNTINGTON BEACH : 3rd School District Enacts Smoking Ban

Share

The Huntington Beach City School District this week became the third district in Orange County to ban smoking in its facilities.

The new policy forbids the use of any tobacco products--including cigarettes and chewing tobacco--in district buildings and vehicles.

Employees, who have been allowed to smoke in designated lounges at some facilities, now may light up only if they are outside of district buildings and out of the view of children.

Workers at facilities where no students are present, such as the district central offices and maintenance yard, will be allowed to smoke anywhere outside of buildings. At school sites where employees smoke, outdoor smoking areas will be set up that are shielded from the view of others.

No one opposed the prohibition at two board meetings at which the issue was discussed.

The policy is similar to those now in place in the Fountain Valley and Ocean View school districts.
