A man and woman were fatally shot in the head at close range Sunday morning while parked in front of an apartment complex, police said.

Sgt. Michael Schwartz of the Buena Park Police Department said investigators had located no suspects or eyewitnesses to the double slaying, which occurred shortly after 2 a.m. in front of the Executive Park Apartments at 7601 Franklin St. The couple were in a maroon-colored Chevrolet Monte Carlo when a gunman apparently pulled up alongside them in another car and fired several shots.

Javier Contreras, 46, of Santa Ana, who was driving the Monte Carlo, died at the scene. The name of the female victim, 38, who died about an hour later at UCI Medical Center, was not released pending notification of relatives.

Contreras’ foot apparently slipped off the brake pedal after he was shot, and his car rolled forward about half a block, crashing into a parked car.

“It doesn’t appear to be gang-related, but the investigation is still open,” Police Sgt. Rod Liniger said.

Three teams of detectives were working on the case Sunday.

“We’re up to our elbows right now,” Schwartz said, adding that the motive “could be anything. We don’t know yet.”

Schwartz said Franklin Street usually “is full of people” during that time of night but no witnesses have come forward. He said the area has had gang problems in the past but nothing similar to the double slaying.

Several apartment residents recalled hearing four shots but said they did not see what happened.

“I was in the shower, and I heard the shots. I told my boyfriend to have the kids duck,” one woman said.

Becky Parks, manager of the complex, said apartment residents apparently did not know the victims. “We’ve talked to a lot of people to see if they knew them and no one seems to know them here,” she said.

On Sunday morning, shattered glass remained in the street in front of the complex, as well as in front of 7571 Franklin St., where the parked car was hit.
