OXNARD : Market to ‘Adopt’ 9 Elementary Schools

A supermarket chain that plans to open a store in south Oxnard plans to “adopt” nine Oxnard elementary schools in a program that emphasizes environmental education.

The schools will receive donations from the redemption of recycled containers at Smith’s Food store, scheduled to open this month at Oxnard’s Centerpoint Mall on Saviers Road.

“We will benefit handsomely,” said Norman R. Brekke, superintendent of the Oxnard School District.

The schools anticipate receiving “several tens of thousands of dollars” each year, Brekke said before district trustees approved the partnership last week.

Principals from the nine schools have met with officials of Smith’s Food & Drug Centers Inc. to spell out how the students could benefit from the program, Smith’s spokesman Tom Dolan told Oxnard trustees.

The program will divert refunds paid for reusing shopping bags to the schools if the customer wishes, and schools also will receive a portion of Smith’s revenue from the sale of bulk cardboard.
