Ventura College has received a grant from the U.S. Department of Education that will be used to help keep disadvantaged students in school until graduation, school officials announced.

The $407,631 first-year grant is part of the department’s Strengthening Institutions program.

Ventura College was one of 50 first-year recipients this year, and one of five in California.

The grant can be renewed for four years if the college continues to meet the program’s guidelines.

Two teachers and two assistants will be hired with the funds, said Robert Ringer, who will supervise the program.

“We plan a closer integration of instructional and student services with the help of the grant,” Ringer said.

Ventura becomes the second county community college to receive one of the grants.

Oxnard College received a first-year grant of $499,989 last year, and was awarded $450,297 for this year, said administrator Cheryl Shearer.
