From Staff and Wire Reports

Notre Dame Coach Lou Holtz said Sunday he will not suspend or dismiss quarterback Rick Mirer and linebacker Demetrius DuBose for their weekend arrests at an off-campus party but will discipline them in another way for violating team rules.

Both are expected to play in the Fighting Irish’s season opener Saturday at home against Indiana. “I think there’s a strong possibility that both would start,” Holtz said.

“I have every reason to believe that Rick and Demetrius, due to extenuating and mitigating circumstances, happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and I’m of the opinion this will be confirmed in the future.

“The violations of our team rules were a serious error and have been treated as such.” Holtz said team rules include a drinking policy, but he would not say whether either player had violated it. He did not say how the players will be disciplined.

Mirer and DuBose both practiced Sunday and also attended a previously scheduled team meeting earlier in the day.
