If there is strength in numbers, then the Fighting Irish look on paper as if they should be able to hold their own against most of the other teams in the league. Olson has 45 players on the roster, including 17 returners and nine starters. But he’s worried about their size. “We only have two guys over 200 pounds, and neither of them will hit the field,” Olson said. “We are just going to have to be good technicians and do the best we can.” That’s not a good sign for Kennedy, which has slipped in the league standings the past two seasons after winning six of seven games and finising one game behind Pacifica in 1988. Among Olson’s problems is finding a suitable replacement for all-league player Vince Church at running back (1,143 yards rushing and 19 touchdowns). At this point, Mobley, Montrehieul and Iverson seem to be the front-runners to fill that need. Guthrie, who threw for 822 yards after replacing Rod Rosales at quarterback in mid-season, directs the offense.
