OUTLOOK

Canyon was one victory away from qualifying for the playoffs last season. Not bad for a program that had won only two games in two years before Shumer arrived in 1989. However, things may get worse before the Comanches step up to contender status. They are lacking depth and experience this season. The team has 38 players, only 10 of who are seniors. “That group was freshmen when I took over the program and they’ve been disappearing ever since,” Shumer said. “We have to keep people healthy this season or we’re up the creek.” Brunswig is a two-year starter in the backfield. He gained 706 yards and scored nine touchdowns last season. Pappas, also a two-year starter, and Buckel give Brunswig two good offensive linemen. Those three are among the top linebacker groups in the county. However, they won’t be enough. “Our freshman team won the league last season, so we feel we can turn the corner in a couple years,” Shumer said.
