Divers recovered the body of a 23-year-old man in Miramar Lake Friday, the medical examiner’s office reported.

Perry Randolph Johnson, originally from Pennsylvania, apparently jumped off a pier after filling a backpack with stones and strapping it to his back, said medical examiner’s investigator Robert Engel.

Divers were called to the lake Thursday afternoon after an employee of the park discovered Johnson’s California identification card and other personal belongings at the end of a fishing pier. A resident at the address listed on the card told police that Johnson might have been suicidal and had told her and others that he might take his life by jumping off the pier with a weighted pack.

Divers delayed a search of the lake until 6 a.m. Friday because of darkness and an impending electrical storm that officials feared might strike the metal pier. The body was found at 8:05 a.m. in 25 feet of water. An autopsy has been scheduled for today.
