Look Closer at the Noisy Marine Fliers

Share

I applaud the letters from Lawrence G. Body and Barbara and Pete Meyn (“Jet Noise Around El Toro Air Station,” Sept. 1). Richard Barrett’s letter, on the other hand, makes me realize that there are many others out there who might benefit from a greater understanding of the mission of Marine pilots and of the requirement for excellence in the execution of that mission.

I could dwell on that mission but prefer personally to make arrangements for Barrett to confront the pilots and support personnel of a Marine squadron and the general he criticizes. The Marines would welcome the opportunity to further their cause as a good neighbor by answering his questions and by winning him over intellectually. No small part of that exchange would deal with the outstanding safety record of the Marines at El Toro since 1942. Barrett would quickly come to grips with the fact that these fliers are among the best educated, brightest and dedicated young men and women in our nation. They have been charged with awesome responsibilities and meet them daily.
