Twenty years after the wishbone first electrified college football, former Oklahoma assistant Jerry Pettibone hopes an updated version will resurrect Oregon State football. But the Beavers’ new head coach is off to a rocky start.

Utah quarterback Frank Dolce passed for 209 yards and a touchdown Saturday to spoil Pettibone’s debut with the Beavers and lead the Utes to a 22-10 victory.

Chris Yergensen kicked three field goals for Utah (2-0). Oregon State has won just once in its last 16 games stretching over three seasons.

Utah Coach Ron McBride said he was pleased with the way his veteran defense handled the Beavers’ triple option, limiting Oregon State to 111 yards rushing and 209 yards total offense. Beaver quarterback Ed Browning alone lost 60 yards rushing.

Oregon State played respectable defense, holding Utah to 84 yards rushing and 293 yards total offense. The Utes had 458 yards total offense in their season-opening 12-7 win over Utah State.

Turnovers hurt Oregon State. The Beavers fumbled on their first two plays. In all, they lost five of eleven fumbles.
